Abstract
This article handles the question of contemporary Ob-Ugric prose fiction in an interdisciplinary context, drawing on the methods of sociology, cultural anthropology and literary theory. The basic idea is that this prose fiction, although formally being the product of one author, is somewhere on the borders of folk literature and modem fiction. It follows from this borderline position that this prose fiction has interesting distinctive features in three areas: in being the mirror of an archaic culture, in being the literature of a minority community, and in being a young literature. In the article I look at the relationship between the text and its possible receptions, discussing questions like the unfamiliarity of a culture completely different from the reader’s one, or the so-called “folklorization” process that such texts may fall under when translated, published and read in a Western context. It is interesting to see how the basic “archaic-ness” or “oral-ness” of the culture disintegrates in society, how a young written culture is being bom, and what changes this brings to the young prose fiction: how individual, tradition and collective identity interact within the community. As a heritage of the archaic culture, the texts show not only a temporal and spatial concept completely different from the Western one, but also examples of a ritual behaviour and insert of mythology drawing from the beliefs of the Ob-Ugric peoples. However, the authors interestingly play two roles: they act as “insiders” in redefining and strengthening the collective identity of the culture, but they act as “outsiders” in documenting the ancient traditions and the recent crisis of a disintegrating culture.
