Abstract
The history of medieval swords shows that armor and weaponry are interconnected; changes in armor indicated changes in weaponry, including swords. This connection was the reason why hand-and-a-half swords evolved during the 13th century. According to its contemporary names - longsword, great war sword, etc. - this kind of sword was created for a special purpose; these names always point out the weapon's bigger size and that these swords were used only on the battlefield. The importance of the sword type is well illustrated by the fact that despite the popularity of the rapier, the hand-and-a-half sword was in use until the beginning of the 17lh century. We do not know the time of appearance of this sword type in Hungary. I suppose that it arrived to Hungary around the mid-13th century, similarly to other parts of Europe, but on the basis of the nine swords examined here general consequences can not be drawn, so further research is needed. In contrast to Hungary where the question was hardly studied, foreign researchers seem to have discovered a hand-and-a-half sword type which may have been of Hungarian origin. According to Marko Aleksic's study, the prototypes of the sword family N appear to have been produced in Serbia and they came to the territory of Hungary in the late14th or early-15th century, due to the Turkish expansion. In Aleksic's opinion, this sword type was widely used and produced through the 15th century in the territory of Medieval Hungary.
