Abstract
In the 1930s it was a regular debate how could the historical middle class in Hungary fill its - mostly supposed - leadership in better way. In 1939 Lajos Zilahy the famous writer came forward with the idea of the „school of eminents". It was an important part of his plan that the selection should be expanded for the search of talented people with peasant origin in the first place.The idea caused a great stir among the writers and other intellectuals. But the realization met with financial difficulties though for the sake of the cause Mr Zilahy offered his whole property. The banks and the organizations of manufacturers made a million pengő offer in honour of the 20th anniversary of the election of Governor Horthy. This foundation made possible that the activity of talent rescue could be started up. In the autumn of 1941 as an experiment the selecting exams took place in Mohács and Jászapáti and in the two grammar schools about 40-45 boys began their studies. According to this plan 600 children could get into the grammar schools of the country in this way every year. For another two years „competitive examinations" were held but the great historical changes overstepped the attempt. Still the discussions and trials contributed to the relaxation of inflexibility between the two world wars in the closed Hungarian society.
