Abstract

Carlo Ginzburg's perhaps most important works, I benandanti (1966). Cheese and Mites (1976) and A Night Story (1989) verging on history, ethology and historical anthropology raise interesting questions for the historian. Although all of them examine different subjects, the idea (explained in detail in A Night Story) that certain phenomena of European peasant culture can be traced back to a thousand-year-old system of traditions of Eurasian origin, is present in each. The other two works examine respectively the fertility cult still present at Friuli in the 16th century and the view of life of a miller also in the 16th century. The author relies basically on written sources: documents of Inquisition proceedings. His method is to find the untypical in the evidene, something which answers other than the questions. In Cheese and Mites it is accompanied by the fact - assuming the active interpretation of the text - that he compares the readings of the miller, The Bible and the other products of contemporary religious folk and „pulp" literature with what was said about them during the proceedings. In this way he attempts to find the „reading key", the „filter" that would throw light on the beliefs and mentality of the miller. The starting point of this remarkable discovery is the active interaction of „élite" and „popular" cultures, but this dichotomy in the above-mentioned works and in the works of other authors dealing with the same subject results in thrusting the operation and the actors of mediation (the analysis of which was attempted successfully by Burke, Geary, Geremek or Gurevich) into the background.
