Abstract

This study examines one area the much debated of Hungarian myths, the motif of Csaba (Chaba) and the theory formed in historiography about the supposed person of Csaba living in the tenth century. The author is of the opinion that the hypothesis based on Aventinus (16th c.) and Anonymus (early 13th c.), according to which Csaba was a raiding chieftain from the tenth century, cannot be accepted. The author maintains, that the historical Csaba, the member of the Aba-clan lived in the 11th or 12th century and settled with his people on the Balkan-peninsula. His memory preserved by the inhabitants of some of the Hungarian Szeklers (Szekely) settlements served as the basis for the formation of the fictional figure of Attila's son in the „Hun-story" of Simon de Keza.
