Abstract

Written legal norms, as well as language phenomena in general, always need to be interpreted. This interpretation can happen in numerous ways. In this essay, firstly, I present a methodology which describes fourteen different possible legal interpretation methods and, then, I try to find whether the Hungarian high courts and, mainly, the Supreme Court of Hungary in what proportion uses these separate techniques. The basis of this survey is a certain part of those Supreme Court decisions that were made in 2009 and published in the official bulletin concerning law enforcement. The author's hope is that the findings of this empirical research can contribute to an even more precise reflection to legal interpretation methodology and a possible practical application thereof.
