Abstract

Earlier historical literature dated the great Hispanic campaign of the Hungarians to 940, 943 and 943-944 respectively on the basis of information preserved by bishop Liudprand and the Arab Masudi. After the discovery and subsequent publication of book V by Ibn Hayyan [Ibn Hayyan] iiited Muqtabis, it became evident that the above-mentioned campaign took plkce in 942. The author of the present study using the pieces of information supplied by Ibn Hayyan and Udzri came to the conclusion that the campaign of the Hungarians on the Iberian Peninsula lasted more than a month and a half; it started on 10th June and ended in the last days of July. Data relating to the Hispanic campaign made it possible for the author to establish the measure of the daily march of Hungarian light cavalry troops, which was about 30 kilometres each day. According to the author this amount can be regarded as the average marching performance in the case of other Hungarian campaigns, if there were no extreme conditions influencing their output.
