Abstract

In 1358 a chronicle had been started about the deeds of the Hungarians. Five copies were made of it and one of them is the famous and representative codex, later called Illuminated Chronicle. This important codex contains several important source-problems. The first of them is the question of the authorship. The scholars found out that its author was most likely Márk of Kált, a clergyman of the Angevin Hungarian royal court. But Márk not is the only one writer of the whole text: many traces (direct references to elder works, double story-tellings, contradictions) reveal the signs of previous writing personalities. Among the Hungarian scholars there is a serious discussion on the author and the age of the first Hungarian history. My opinion supports the possibility to presume that bishop Miklós wrote the Primordial Gesta Hungarorum during the reign of King András I (1046-1060) or King Salamon (1063-1074). The writing and re-writing process lasted during the Middle Ages, but we know texts only from the late Arpád-era and the Angevin-period. Although these chronicles contain many philological differences* their common direction appears clearly: to give a framework on the history of the early Hungarian state.
