This essay is a part of a research dealing with the life quality of the families raising up children living with autism; its aim to support the efficiency of the health visitors’ nursing job. The study deals with the concept of the deficiency appearing on different areas of science. It presents the earliest studies about the disabled people from the prehistoric age to our days. It deals with the first appearance of prejudices, their reasons and the suggestions for solution at the different areas of science. We tried to reveal as many disciplines as possible which get into contact with disabled people in some form or another, from historical-culture anthropology through philosophical, psychological and religious approaches. Following the exploration it can be declared that in different ages different fields had different views on the concept of deficiency that strengthens the importance of the holistic view.
