Abstract
The word sala occurs as a new term in the Atharva-veda. The hymns AV 3, 12 and AV 9, 3 are known as the sala hymns, which deal with building and construction. The detailed description of the structure of the sala has been made by L. Renou and H. Zimmer, but there are some points concerning the function of the said, which remained unanswered. Sala is generally translated as 'house', but the sources indicate that it might have been somewhat more than a simple dwelling. It is quite likely that it functioned as a house, a stable, a stall, a granary and a ritual site as well. Thus from this 'functional' point of view we propose a new approach: the sala might be called a 'shelter'. This word expresses the essence of the sala quite well. The house is a shelter for people, the stable and the stall for animals, the granary for food and the ritual site for gods.
