Abstract

In this article we give an overview on the historical sources of Taprobane (Ceylon, Sri Lanka) and on the information the ancient authors had about the island. We publish a Hungarian translation of Pliny the Elder's Natural History book VI, chapters 81-91, with notes. We discuss the historically debated points of this text. In our opinion the arrival of the freedman of Annius Plocamus in Taprobane could happen during or somewhat before the rule of Claudius. Defining this date is of significance because direct and habitual trade relations between Rome and Taprobane started only after this event. We hypothesize that the family of Annius Plocamus including slaves and freedmen could have significant influence on the eastern trade of the Roman Empire. The journey and financial activity of the libertus of Annius Plocamus indicates an increasing role and influence of freedmen in the society and economy of the first century Roman Empire. Description of Taprobane made possible for Pliny to contrast the idealized world of the distant island with social and moral problems of contemporary Roman society.
