Abstract

The use of olive oil in the Roman Empire was widespread. Together with cereals and wine, olive oil was a vitally important food. It was used for baking and as spice as well. Olive oil was particularly important in personal hygiene as it was used by athletes, before and after bath, and in medicine. Low quality olive oil was used as fuel for lanterns, as lubricant for mechanical tools, or for polishing wooden furniture. The study analyzes the archaeological traces and written sources of olive trade in Hispania, the most important region of olive cultivation. It also explores the social and economic status of olive merchants.
