Abstract

The author gives a study about the provenance of Vita Quinque Fratrum by Bruno of Querfurt and its main characters. She also points out the artistic features of the text. The zealous life and personality of the hermits Benedict and John, who lived in the company of St. Romuald, deserve special attention as well. Based on the vita, the author presents the venture of the two brothers in Poland, the unsuccessful attempt of Bruno to meet the brothers and the unsuccessful attempt of Benedict to meet Bruno. Benedict and John lived in a community with their other brothers. They sent a brother – called Barnabas- to Rome, but he did not arrive back until the discussed time. We are also informed about the robbers who killed the five brothers in the forest in the evening of 10th November 1003, and about the conversion of the murderers. The martyred brothers Benedict, John, Isaac and Mathew were buried together. Their young servant Christinus - who had tried to defend himself from the killers – was at first separated from the four brothers, but later his body was taken out of his grave, and it was found unharmed. So, finally, who were together in life, could rest next to each other. After the death of the brothers, miracles happened on the scene of their murder. A sinful priest converted; people possessed by devil were saved; a Hungarian experienced wonderful phenomena of light, voice and smell, etc. Boleslaw, duke of Poland had a monastery built on the place where the brothers died. Barnabas became the first abbot of this monastery. Bruno, who wrote the vita of the five brothers, died as a martyr on the land of the heathens in 1009.
