Abstract

The author gives a survey of the primary sources and secondary literatures about the journey of Brun of Querfurt to Kiev. The most important source is the letter of Brun to emperor Henry II., but there are further sources too: the Bavarian version written by Wibert who was the discipline of Brun; the Saxon version written by Thietmar of Merseburg and the Annales Quedlinburgienses; the Italian version was written by Peter Damiani and the Aquitanian version was written by Adémar of Chabannes. There are contradictions in the sources, if we want to know what Brun did in the Russ and with which success. The primary sources about Brun are different because they are written in different literary genre. All of the sources know that the Russ belonged to the Christian world Adémar knows that Russ was converted by Greek, but he considered the Russ as a part of the Christian word.
