Abstract

Based on the works of Brun of Querfurt we can realize that Brun was well orientated mainly in relations of Eastern-Europe. He reports about Hungarians, Poles, Russians and Petshenegians not from legends and hearsay, but he has been there among them. His report about Italy is based on personal experience, too. He puts less emphasis on the western region. On the field of religion the bishopric of Merseburg, the archbishopric of Magdeburg and the fidelity to the pope were important to him. In his biography about Saint Adalbert he reports with love about Magdeburg, where not only Adalbert but also Brun himself had studied. He criticizes the dissolving the bishopric of Merseburg and he interprets the disasters that beat the empire as revenge of Saint Laurence, who was the patron saint of Merseburg. Brun’s colleague, Benedict entrusted him not to begin the mission among the heathen without the permission of the pope. Brun did the missionary work not in the service of an earthly ruler: he regarded St. Peter as his senior. Brun mentions the German rulers with respect, but he is not meagre with the judgements, too: Otto II. dissolves the bishopric of Merseburg, Otto III . leaves Germany, his native country and goes to Italy, Henry II . formed an alliance with the heathens against the Christian duke Boleslaw. Brun mentions the nude Saracens, probably because of their weak equipment. Sources of 12th century mention the nude Saracens also. Brun mentions some of the East-middle-European dukes with their names (Wenzel, king of the Bohemians and Mieszko and Boleslaw, dukes of Poland), but he mentions further dukes with their titles: he writes about senior Ruzorum, who can be identified with Volodimir the Great, and he mentions the Hungarian senior, who can be identical with duke Géza. Senior is probably the title of an independent ruler in the works of works of Brun. It is strange, that he does not mention King St. Steven, though he tried to convert the black Hungarians in his kingdom.
