Abstract

As one looks into the history of the Székelys of Bukovina, it is remarkably striking that they had to face with serious hardships during the course of their migration at the end of the 19th and the fi rst half of the 20th centuries. In spite of the fact that they (or their descendants) have scattered throughout the Carpathian Basin and overseas, the stories representing their common past are still vividly present in their remembrance, operate as cultural codes in their fairly lively discourse on the protection of traditional culture, and oft en represent normative control in everyday life. Th e relationship between the Székelys of Bukovina and their motherland, caring about the ‘separated brethrens’– as they would term it in contemporary media –, usually fermented with political dimension, as well as the social, journalistic and scientifi c interests have been continuous since the end of the 19th century. Moreover, a remarkably intensive trend of protecting traditional culture beginning in the 1960-70s can be detected among them, which can be attributed to folk- and ethnocultural movements. A symbolic event of these processes was when a Székely group from Bukovina won the TV talent show Röpülj Páva in 1978. Manuscripts of the ethnic group in which they tried to summarize and retain their own past, fate and customs are also considered signifi cant. In my study I intend to present example of these great processes and research historical paradigms at small scale. My primary resource is the archive of the Nyisztor-Lőrincz-Miklós families, embracing fi ve generations, and which were primarily created and retained due to intrinsic motivation or external encouragement by female members of the families. Th e documents are not only private interpretations of the ethnic group’s history and determinant events of the 20th century, but they also operate as the exposed formations of remembrance. Concerning the aforesaid, I focus on the following issues: Where can the intensifying folkloristic interest towards the ethnic group be detected? In what way had this infl uenced the establishment and content of the archive, as well as the consideration of their own culture to be a heritage? Researchers’ interest resulted in new kinds of relationships for the family. How does the family’s relationships develop, and its dynamics and success change?
