Abstract
This paper examines the role of relationships during the journey of refugees and at diff erent stations of their lives through the presentation of the story of a person who has arrived in Hungary as a thirdworld refugee. I try to fi nd the answers for questions such as how the dynamics of relationships infl uence success, how these connections are interpreted in storytelling and how the establishment of transnational relations aff ect the refugees’ lives. Th e study will provide us with information about the representation of transnational and diaspora-centred relationships in storytelling, and about the way how the voyage, foreignness and exoticness are incorporated in sequences. Furthermore, I aim to demonstrate that the dynamics of ego- and relation-networks and the defi nitions of success or failure become more comprehensible through the analysis of narrative techniques. Th erefore, the changes in the morphology and intensity of relationships that are associated with the transition from one life stage to another are interpreted through the life of a Somali man. In my opinion, the success of refugee-life is determined by fostering, breaking and building relationships, because the person has to act eff ectively in all of these situations in order to move forward in space, social status or prestige connected to the diaspora.
