Abstract
That phase in Horthy's life that he spent in Portugal (1949—1957) is still completely unexplored in historical publications in Hungary for a number of reasons: from October 1944 he was no longer an active politician, his extradition was removed from the political agenda, and Hungarian socialist historiography interfered with exploring the facts in connection with him. His move from Bavaria to Portugal was motivated by his wife's ill health, his fear of extraditon, and the ban imposed on his political activities. The affairs of the separated family were run by Horthy's daughter-in-law, the widow of the vice-regent, with help from the U. S. Horthy foundation. Here in Portugal the ex-regent, still in good physical and mental health, wrote and published his memoirs. Horthy lived in Portugal as a private individual, even though from time to time he publicly expressed his viewpoint on various questions concerning Hungary, or the Hungarian emigré community. He often returned to explaining his decisions of October 1944. His homesickness, as well as the direction world events were taking, increased his hopes of returning to Hungary, and made him occasionally join in the emigré discussions about the formation of a new 'national army'. The shock caused by the suppression of the 1956 revolution consumed his energies. He died a few weeks later.
