Abstract
This paper analyses the hydrological features of Baradla Cave. Together with the Slovakian caves the Baradla-Domica cave system is a UNESCO world heritage site and the preservation of karst water, as a drinking water reservoir is a very important task. First of all, the water balance (precipitation, infiltration water, seepage water and évapotranspiration water) of the catchment area was defined. Secondly, the changes in different physicochemical parameters (water temperature, pH, electric conductivity, dissolved oxygen content, redox potential and nitrate concentration) of karst water were defined by using stable and mobile monitoring sites after the rapid and slow melting of snow. The quality (chemical parameters) of dripping water was also examined during these periods. We found that the extreme water level fluctuations imply changes in water quality parameters that affect drinking water quality. Further monitoring would be particularly important since it provides an opportunity to understand the changes in trends and thus the future development of a more accurate protection strategy for the catchment area.
