Abstract

Caius Cilnius Maecenas is rather known as the generous patron of such poets as Virgil and Horace, which has made his name a personifi cation of such activities. Nevertheless, he was a confi dant and political advisor to Octavian and had a signifi cant infl uence to him. He fi rst appears in 40 BC, when he was employed by Octavian in arranging his marriage with Scribonia, and aft erwards in assisting to negotiate the treaty of Brundisium and the reconciliation with Mark Antony. He also had an important mission by the Treaty of Tarentum. During the Sicilian war against Sextus Pompeius in 36, Maecenas was sent back to Rome and was entrusted with supreme administrative control in the city and in Italy. Although holding no offi ce or military command, he secretly scotched a plot to kill Octavian on his return from the East and executed its supposed leader. Th is article tries to highlight his signifi cant political role he had played in the establishment of the principate beside Octavian.
