Abstract
University of Pécs is one of the largest universities in Hungary in terms of the number of students. Therefore the presence of the university has a significant impact on the economic life of Pécs even apart from the long-term benefits of the town and students. Industries which are satisfying typical student needs are determined by the presence of tens of thousands of students during the academic year. This study undertakes to be a first step of a series of studies examining the impact of presence of the university on Pécs by attempting to quantify the impact that the presence of the students itself exerts on economy of Pécs. It is a short-term effect, which strength is clearly dependent on the number of present students, that is why the changes in rules which affect higher education first appear through this in the economic life of Pécs. Moreover, a portion of the impact is relatively accurately spatially localizable.
