In his paper the author tries to establish a phonological system in closer connection[wiih the phonetical (mainly with the physiological) principle than usual in traditional phonology or in that based on "distinctive features". The stock of phonemes in Hungarian, like in any other language system, is divided first of all to two main fields: into that of vowels and consonants. — But vowels themselves form two separate systems: one of the short and another of the long ones. The two correspond to each other in main characteristics but not exactly in details: on the lower grade we find differences between short and long ones in quality as well, not only in duration. Both vowel systems show 3 axes, the left.one being pure-velar (phonetically: velar labial), the „ right one pure illabial (phonetically: palatal illabial), while the middle one a transitory type (being palatal labial). — And each of them shows 3 grades: a higher, a middle and a lower one. The middle axis is incomplete in both systems because has no lower member, but the right one is to be taken for complete because the "non-higher" member is ambivalent in. them. (Cf. Fig. 1 and 2). The ambivalence is evidently proved by morphophonology. (Cf. Fig. 5 and 6.) Consonantal system in Hungarian is characterized by 3 fundamental lines Ithose of occlusives, plosives and fricatives), completed by a mediary one (that of affricates) and 2 complementary ones (of liquids). Horizontally it shows 5 fundamental positions. (Cf. Fig. 9 resp. 10.) — Length is a distinctive feature of phonemes on the field of consonats too, yet long ones do not form a separate system none of them differring from the short but in duration. The store of phonemes and their partaking in changes is proved to be more complete in the middle of the consonantal system than on the margins.
