Abstract
The above paper is an attempt at deriving contrastive emphasis syntactically from parallel or symmetrical underlying structures. In controversy with Ferenc Kiefer his 'emphasis-generators' (is, csak, etc.) prove to be results in the course of generating emphatic structures rather than the sources of the surface phenomenon emphasis. The procedure outlined also serves to account for nouns being emphatic when they have no article. It seems fairly well established to suppose that underlying emphatic sentences there is always a twin deep sentence with one negatively marked as to the other. Our concept of the deep structure relies on the grammar of Noam Chomsky's Aspects •of the Theory of Syntax.
