Abstract

The first figure known also by name in Votyak cultural history and literature is GRIGORIJ VERE§(*AGIN /1851-1930/. While working as an elementary school-teacher and later as a pastor he wrote several excellent works on ethnography that are indispensable even today. His poem "Lullaby" full of human warmth and poetic talent was published in his monograph "The Votyaks of Sarapul District" /1889/ as a folk-song; now it is considered to be the first work of literary character in Votyak. The rest of his poems was published in his Udmurt language-book of original viewpoint under the pseudonym: Udmort. He also wrote a long epic poem based on folklore material and a few moralistic plays.
