Abstract

The distinction between sentences as system- sentences and utterances as text-sentences includes oppositions on several levels of the language. This paper will discuss the problem how the utterances can be characterized, as opposed to sentences, on various levels. These levels are as follows: I. The level of information with symbols. 1. The level of sounding. 2. The level of sense. 3. The level of morphosyntactic structure. 4. The level of thematic structure. II. The level of indexicai information. Three facts result from these oppositions with reference to utterances: 1. The speech activity of the speaker is represented physically, that is in body, in the utterance. 2. The utterance is, primarily, the realization of spoken language, and secondarily, that of the written one. 3. The style manifests'itself, mainly, in the utterance (in the text-sentence), and the individual style is revealed in the whole of the text.
