Abstract

How can Hungarian words like már (already) and még (yet, still) carry elements of denotative and pragmatic meaning at the same time? In this paper I have made an attempt at describing the way in which the denotative meanings of már and még, and their negated counterparts, make up a microsystem whose elements relate a given action or any of its components to a process of some comparable action(s) or components. Defining the core meaning of már in terms of transmission to another state of affairs and that of még as maintenance of a preceding state of affairs, I have stated that these adverbs frequently take on additional semantic elements of the pragmatic type, thus showing the speaker's attitude towards the contents of his utterance. It is achieved by specifying the action from the point of view of its quantitative and/or temporal realization.lt is also recognized that the larger proportion the pragmatic meaning attains, the less transparent the role of denotation would be. Apart from the adverbs már and még I distinguish the particles már and még which are supposed basically to dispose of pragmatic meaning, már expressing various degrees of impatience, while még is used for predicting some pleasant or unpleasant event. Már and még, as particles, have several characteristic features — such as not fitting into the above microsystem; heavy dependence upon context; lack of correlation with their negated counterparts; and, hence, inability to refer directly to the state of affairs in terms of an action in process. However, in a certain set of their exclamatory uses they do show some degree of adherence.
