Abstract

One of the unsolved problems of the Hungarian or Sekler Runic script is that practically all of its early monuments occur only among the Seklers in Transylvania. None of the authentic monuments is older than the second half of the 15th century, though its existence is mentioned in 13th century sources. In 1598 J.Telegdi wrote a booklet on the script and from this time we can observe a revial of the script. At the present time about 15 monuments are known which are older than or independent of the work Telegdi. One of the oldest monuments is the so-called Alphabet of Nikolsburg. The paper deals with the history of this Alphabet. It was discovered on the cover of an incunabula dated 1483. The owner of the book was a certain Philip of Penchich and the family's hereditary lands lay 15 km from Olmütz. In the humanist court of King Matthias a certain Philipec played a key role. He was born near Olmütz, studied there and was nominated Bishop of Olmütz by King Matthias. Earlier he had been Bishop of Värad. He founded the printing house of Brünn (Brno) where the Chronicle of Thuröczi was printed. In the Chronicle of Thuröczi the Sekler script is praised as the script of the Huns and the glorification of the Huns formed part of humanist efforts to propagate Matthias as the „second Attila". A Russian anvoy Fedor Kuricin, who visited the court of Matthias in 1482 and lived there for two or three years, was later accused in Moscow of heresy. Among his works there was a kind of secret script the model of which could have been the Sekler script. The author claims that the Sekler Runic script was known at the court of King Matthias and humanist scholars may have had a part in the history of this script.
