Abstract

Genitive relations are built in the Finno-Ugric languages with the help of possessive suffixes. The genetive constructions usually have several different meanings besides expressing real possession. In languages without a definite article, they are frequently used to indicate definiteness — as in the case of Northern-Ostyak. In this language, the third person Px-es are used most often in this role, but there are several examples of the second person form, too. In most cases they show the definiteness of the subject and object. In the article the author also gives examples of an unusual possessive construction in which the participle forms of the verb tDi 'to have' are used.
