Abstract

After a presentation of the' etymological proposals to date the author derives a new idea: according to her the Hungarian gyanu goes back to a late Latin *gianue or to a vulgar giano. The latter can be found in the etymological dictionary of Alessio-Battisti with the meaning 'false person'. The word derives from the name of the Latin god Janue who was represented as two-faced. This etymological proposal in contradiction of earlier ones facilitates the explanation of the meaning of the word and is a new addition to, the Hungarian — North-Italian relationships of the late medieval ages. The etymplogy of the word belongs to a serie of semantical changes where we have other examples of proper name common noun changes (aggastydn, fukar, kagdn, svdda).
