Abstract
The first part of this paper gives a review of different approaches to the origin of passive derivational suffixes in Hungarian and presents the current hypothesis. Special emphasis is given to the paralellism of processes, the function of reflexive sentence structure on the one hand, and the formal and functional interrelatedness between the derivational suffix of the past participle and the inflectional suffix of the past tense (-t/-u), and the systematic influence of the appearance of the accusative suffix on the other. The second part is a classification of the passive derivational verbs found in Bécsi Kódex (Viennese Codex), and a siimmary of some essential problems in the use of the passive.
