Abstract

The observation that the phonetic realisation of Hungarian coronal stop + fricative clusters depends on the morphological status of the unit containing the fricative can be attributed to two different affrication rules. Lexical Affrication joins the root node of the stop to the skeletal node of the fricative, while Postlexical Affrication joins the root node of the fricative to the skeletal node of the stop, both rules preserving earlier association lines. The directionality of the rules conforms to other lexical and postlexical processes of Hungarian.
