Abstract

The present paper outlines the basic assumptions of a metrical syntax of Hungarian. According to it, only those permutations of a Hungarian sentence are grammatical which are also prosodically acceptable. The successful application of prosodic rules will then yield grammatical sentences. In order to determine the proper prosody of the permutations, we apply the approach of metrical phonology by proposing a framework of metrical syntax. In this approach, the proper prosody of sentences is determined by stress reduction rules on the basis of which the proper prosodic phrases in relation to the stress and intonation of constituents can be determined. Stress reduction takes place between adjacent phonological words. Stress reduction follows a hierarchy of these phonological words regarding their accessibility to stress reduction. These rules of metrical syntax do not only determine the possible prosody of sentences, they are also the basis for their logical (scope) interpretation.
