Abstract
Discontinuoues constituents are notoriously difficult to treat for any generative grammar and especially so in the case of Hungarian, where the word order of sentences depends on the communicative role of the constituents rather then their grammatical role. We argue that construction grammar is highly adequate for the description of these phenomena, since it is exactly the fact that different constructions are realised simultatiously in a Hungarian sentence - such as, e.g., the subject verb, the topic comment, the focus background or the constrastive topic construction - that is responsible for word order. We represent constructions and lexical entries by Attribute Value Structures, which encode both syntactical and semantic information, and the generation of a sentence is driven by the semantic representation, in such a way that all syntatic constraints are satisfied by the sentence. A further claim is that an additional feature needs to be encoded, namely constructions often assign a particular position to an unsprecified constituent marked 'carrier +' the identity of which depends on the verb., i.e. it is specified by the AVS correponding to it.
