Abstract

In the first part of the paper, the author analyzes the general semantic aspects of body-part terminology. She examines the structural division of the semantic field of body-part terms, the types of the expressions according to their motivation, morphological formation and meaning extension, and studies the problem of the 'basic level' and 'basic terms' with respect to body-part terminology. She claims that the lexical group of body-part terms includes expressions that show the characteristics of basic terms, but they are not located at the same level in the lexical structure. Contrary to the taxonomic lexical fields, they do not constitute a so-called basic level. In the second part, the author examines the genetic and areal relations of the lexemes meaning 'finger' - 'toe,' 'thumb' and 'ringfinger' in the Uralic languages, utilizing the semantically useful results of typological studies on body-part terms. Furthermore, she analyzes the names of fingers in the Ob-Ugrian languages from written sources and native informants, and comes to the conclusion that identical semantic tendencies underly the abundance and variety of names.
