Abstract
Hungarian voicing assimilation is a process in which an obstruent is assimilated in voicing to a following obstruent. Two consonants behave irregularly: N! undergoes the process but does not trigger it, while /h/ triggers it but does not undergo it. The paper critically discusses the rules formulated about Hungarian voicing assimilation, and proposes one based on a new feature [± transient]. The feature selects voiced oral consonants articulated without complete closure or significant fricative noise. In Hungarian, the underlying [+ transient] consonants are /1/, /r/, /j/ and /v/. The feature makes [± nasal] superfluous in the lexical phonology of Hungarian, so it does not increase the number of underlying features.
