Abstract
Elmúlás 'passing,' referring to death, is frequently encountered in the lyric poetry of Milán Füst. This noun is labeled 'refined' in A magyar nyelv értelmező szótára [Explanatory dictionary of Hungarian], With regard to that label and because of the relatively frequent occurrence, some literary studies come to the conclusion that elmúlás is exclusively used by the poet, thus transforming the individual experience of personal decease to a general experience or a process. But Füst also uses halál 'death,' enyészet, 'decay,' vég 'end,' etc., and sometimes he paraphrases the notion. Besides, verbs like elhal 'wither' or meghal, hal 'die,' and adjectives like elhaló 'withering' or holt 'dead' are also found in his vocabulary. However, it is indubitable that elmúlás plays an important role in the poet's imagery.
