Abstract
Vértes (1952) distinguishes phonetic assimilatory processes (consecutio) and phonological assimilatory processes (assimilatio). This distinction has become standard in university textbooks and traditional analyses. Although all authors agree in the definitions of the processes, they classify the linguistic data differently. This paper proposes a criterion based on the original structuralist notion of the phoneme to unify the classification.
