Abstract
During the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) the Catholic Church has been in a difficult situation. The persecution of the religion in Spain has begun after the proclamation of the Second Republic (from 1931), which the nacionalist groups of General Francisco Franco wanted to demolish with a revolution. When the Civil War outbroke, the Nuncio in Madrid was Silvio Sericano (11 June–4 November 1936) who – though the strict censure – sent several telegrammes and reports to the Apostolic Holy See. These documents can be found in the Historical Archive of the Second Section of the Vatican’s Secretariat of State (Archivio Storico della Sezione per i Rapporti con gli Stati della Segreteria di Stato). After he left Madrid, Sericano wrote a valid final report to the Secretary of State, Eugenio Pacelli, in which he detailed not only the events, but also his personal impressions. In my paper I would like to delineate the situation of the Spanish Catholic Church in the first months of the Civil War based on these documents.
