Abstract
In the case of rural Hungarian cities the first local printed newspapers only appeared after the Reconciliation or even later after the turn of the century. This was the case in Szentes, a town in the Southern Alföld: Miklós Oroszi, the mayor of the town which had at the time a population of nearly thirty-thousand was the first to try his hand at newspaper publishing. The Szentesi Füzetek (Szentes Notebooks), published first in February of 1871 was not a newspaper that covered topics relating to the public sphere, but an agricultural periodical and after its issue zero no more issues were published. A few months later, however, the citizens of Szentes could hold in their hands the first locally printed „mixed content publication”, the Szentesi Lapok (Szentes Pages), published and printed by János Cherrier with László Honthy as the editor-in-chief. The high quality newspaper was not a business success and was discontinued after barely a year. After this Cherrier offered his subscribers a weekly periodical that was similar to its predecessor in all regards, the Alföldi Figyelő (Alföld Inspector), which was even more short-lived with only six issues published. But the enterprising printer did not give up, in August of 1872 he released the Szentesi Lap (Szentes Page) which became the success that he had hoped for becoming the town's first regularly issued, popular periodical.
