Abstract
The Hungarian Protestant church history literature does not deal much with the socalled Délvidék (Southern Region) Mission. This may be largely due to the border changes of the 20th century as well as the religious and ethnic transformations of the area. At the end of the 19th century Károly Szász, the Bishop of the Dunamellék Reformed Diocese, at the end of his church visitation journey, made a stop at the Alsóbaranya Diocese’s Délvidék (Southern Region) Mission parishes. The historical value of the records of this jorney is undisputatble among humanities researchers. Use of the records provides the best opportunity to synthesize several sciences. The source that is analyzed in this study differs only in that it is Károly Szász’s diary from his travels in May of 1984. Thus the source is a personal account which complements the records. We get an excellent picture on how Károly Szász experienced his journey to the Délvidék, and what sort of impressions he received during it. The diary is a vital part of the Southern Region’s Protestant church history,which is almost entirely absent from recent parish summaries.
