Abstract

Nándor Gion’s two most famous historical novels, the Virágos Katona (Soldier with flower) from 1973 and the Rózsaméz (Rosehoney) from 1976, are among the most important Hungarian novels of the Vojvodina. Their plot starts in 1889 and ends on the Holy Saturday of 1941. In these literary pieces from before the change of regime we can only find covert hints to Trianon and to its consequences (the bitter experiences of bearing the fate of the Hungarian minority of the Vojvodina) among the lines and usually on the example of German characters – as I have discussed this in the 2014 conference. These novels did and could not discuss at all the most sensitive topics from before the change of regime, that is the Hungarian rule starting in 1941, and especially the events of 1944. As I have pointed it out in my presentation in January last year, Gion in his next novel from 1977 – which is titled A kárókatonák még nem jöttek vissza (The cormorants have not returned yet) – wrote by symbols about the Hungarian rule in Vojvodina from 1941 to 1944 and especially about the massacre of 1944 commited by Yugoslav partisans. The Sortûz egy fekete bivalyért (Volley for a black buffalo) from 1982 is the direct continuation of the Kárókatonák novel. In my presentation this year I demonstrate how the Sortûz... novel can reflect in a specific literary way on sensitive historical topics (which are sensitive for political reasons) and on the tramuas of minorities using its specific symbols, and especially its symbolic (ally named animal) characters and rites. I also demonstrate how the novel connects to other parts of Nándor Gion’s life-work which are just as rich in meaning.
