Abstract
In our study we wish to present the brief history of the former Department of Marxism of the University of Novi Sad, which was included in the Faculty of Humanities before 1989. We base our work foremost on Serbian language literature as well as interviews conducted with people formerly working within the education unit, we use these sources with their permission. In the former Yugoslavia ideological educators and tutors operated in some form within most institutions of higher education, even if, due to the country’s unique political situation, they did not hold the same special formal and informal status they would have in the GDR and Hungary. Our assumption is that although political economics, Marxist philosophy and Yugoslavian autonomous self-government were taught in Novi Sad as well, examinations on the subject were not as strict as in the case of Hungary. Philosophical thought was especially more liberal because Tito’s regime made this possible for its citizens. An interesting difference is the fact that scientific socialism and scientific communism were not taught in Yugoslavia just as the history of the labor movements was also not in the curriculum. Those who graduated from the Department of Marxism generally went on to teach it at a high school level. In our research we sought to answer what effect the department had on the future young Vojvodina’s intellectuals’ thinking as well as to provide an organizational picture of the educational unit in question. Since, as far as we know, no one has researched the topic in Hungarian before, we believe our study will function as a gap filler.
