The high temperature effect on the pollen grains of the open pollinated local varieties of cultivated maize was investigated with the LM method: Chapalote, Canario de Ocho and St. Croix Long Ear. The experiments were made on 200 °C temperature from 10' until 300 hrs. The qualitative alterations are essentially identical at the different varieties. The originally isodiametric, monoporate pollen grains altered secondarily to monosulcate, trichotomo- tetratomosulcate forms, several secondary ones assimilate to the pollen grains of the Cyperaceae. Among the alterations of the quantitative characters, differences were established between the investigated varieties. The presented results are important from the point of view of the evolution of the angiosperm pollen grains and of the taxonomical evaluation of the fossil pollen grains of "Grarnineae-type".
