Abstract
The Hungarian agricultural trade is successful in the terms of volume but not in the terms of value. The trade balance of Hungary is positive but the export consists mostly of raw materials (especially cereals and oilseeds) with low added value, while the import is made of expensive, processed products with high added value. In 2015, the Hungarian agriculture export was dominated by cereals (50%) in volume while, it is much more fragmented in terms of value. The agriculture import is highly fragmented both in terms of value and volume as well. This is strengthening the result of other papers dealing with this issue: the agriculture trade should be more focused on increasing the added value of the export side. The European Union (EU) has been focusing on a much more liberalized global trade policy thus creating higher competition on single and domestic market. The deregulation process of the EU makes the member states to be more open to the information coming from the international markets. This means that the responsiveness of the producers, the processors and the mercantile segment has to be higher to the changes of the global market.
