Abstract
The aide-mémoire for the Emperor: How to stave off a civil war in Austria–Hungary written by Baron Julius von Szilassy was prepared in Constantinople November 9th 1917. As the Counsellor of the Austrio–Hungarian Embassy in Constantinople he expressed his concerns about the predicament of Austria–Hungary not exluding the possibility of a civil war in the fourth year of the Great War. In his writing he argued for an immediate separate peace agreement with the Entente Countries, a new strategy of foreign affaires and for politics of national consessions. He also highlighted that the challenges of the future are going to be of economical nature, and in order to comply with these circumstances the confederation of nation-staates might well be founded, justifiable. Szilassy was received in an audience of one hour by the Emperor Charles I. (Charles IV. as Hungarian King) January 18th 1918. He expressed his views on the necessity of national consessions. After a succesful politics of this kind can the division of national armies take place. He was against the personal union with Poland, the decision about the status of Poland should be part of a peace agreement with Russia.
