The Rákóczi's War of Independence was started in 1703 by a small group of noblemen and large crowd of peasants in order to restore the old rights ofthe nobility. Anton Eszterházy, colonel ofthe imperial army, joined the insurrection in 1704 and he became marshal and Captain General of Transdanubia in the summer of 1706. In 1707 he served away from his military district, because Francis II. Rákóczi, the leader of the rebellion, appointed János Bottyán, to be governor of Transdanubia. Eszterházy fought in the whole year of 1707 in the Hungarian Highlands, because the position of Captain General of Érsekújvár was unfilled until the summer of 1707, after that Ferenc Barkóczy became the Captain General, but he was an old man and was deputized by Eszterházy. During February and March Eszterházy helped Bottyán's successfull campaign against the imperial invasion on the Transdanubia. His military duties didn't let him to visit the diet of Ónod, but in this way he avoided to take part in the bloodbath on the diet. During the summer and the autumn he and his troops launched raids against the Habsburg controlled territory, but they lost some of their smaller fortresses. At the end of the year Eszterházy left the Hungarian Highlands because Francis II. Rákóczi reassigned him to Transdanubia.
