Abstract
This study gives a brief insight of the history of the Transylvanian Plain (Mezőség) region paying special attention to its microregion called the Belső-Mezőség, and also Visa village with its surrounding. I point out those historical events that determined ethnical, social, and cultural transformations in the local society. The most important ones of these were military campaigns taking place between the 17th and 18th centuries, whose aftermath concluded the almost complete extinction of the Hungarian population. Subsequently, their homelands were populated by peoples of the Balkan predominantly of Romanian origin, which determines even today’s ethnic aspect and that has resulted in small Hungarian sporadic communities.
