Abstract
Druk Yul, as the Bhutanese call their kingdom, means „the land of the thunder dragon”, situated in the Eastern Himalaya Mountains. It is a landlocked country between India and China, and one of the smallest territorial state formations (38,4 thousands square km) in South Asia, with the population 634 982 persons based on the national census 2005. Bhutan is one of the most isolated and — as the Western world’s statistics states on the GDP — the least developed nations in the world. Nonetheless, survey data from the country suggests it is also one of the happiest, as they demonstrate the „Gross National Happiness is more important than Gross National Product”. Our aim was a great challenge to write this paper about Bhutan’s geography, that particularly includes information of the energetics, transportation and tourism. Beyond this challenge there is a more eC ective silhouette of the advantage for publishing this article in Hungarian language that is a stop-gap for our professional B eld that deals with Bhutan as a unique and remarkable kingdom. Bhutan is the B rst state of the Earth, which has formally adopted Gunter Pauli’s „Blue Economy”, for a sustainable and competitive economic and social progress in a holistic way, where all the economic factors have special places. As these are kind of key B elds for the further development in Bhutan, our aim was also to describe their importance, actualized with today’s newest available data and reasonable information for an advanced example that could also be adopted in Europe. ? e Bhutanese live in symbiosis with its country’s natural environment as it is visible almost in every area of the activity of the local population. ? is natural heritage is closely linked to the most important basis for the current conditions of the energetics and transport, and the same as for the tourism. Even if the economic development turns into an important role, Bhutan’s purpose for the sustainability remains unique in its strategy that protects nature and the Gross National Happiness.
