Abstract
Gallienus a római történelem legrejtélyesebb alakjainak egyike. Az ókortörténészek számára korábban állandó vitatémát jelentett személyiségének megítélése, mert a 3–4. századi római történetírás Gallienust a valaha élt legrosszabb császárnak tartotta, aki a birodalmat alkalmatlansága miatt a teljes pusztulásba sodorta. A mai történettudomány azonban kutatási eredményei révén rámutatott a római történetírás szándékos ellentmondásaira, amelyekkel egy olyan császárt feketítettek be, aki minden erejével Róma megmentésén munkálkodott. Ebben a tanulmányban a római kútfők Gallienus-ellenes propagandájának megvilágításával talán közelebb kerülhetünk az igazi Gallienushoz. Under the reign of Gallienus the Roman Empire fell down to an economic, social and financial crisis. The core thesis in Roman historiography of the fourth century is, that the negligence and the disinterest of the Emperor were the main causes. The Roman tradition was governed by this negative image, but Gallienus was much more. In my research I studied the works of Eutropius and Aurelius Victor, and the biography of Gallienus in the Historia Augusta. In the first part of this article, I put the changes of the Roman historiography in the fourth century and the background of the negative criticism of Gallienus in perspective, followed by, the main elements of the senatorial propaganda, which the Roman historiography used against Gallienus. Some examples are natural disasters, the contrasts between Gallienus and the Valerians, Gallienus’ connections with women, and the flaws of Gallienus, like cruelty, negligence, weakness, uncertainty and so on. Finally, in the conclusion I point out that Gallienus was not as bad as the Roman historiography depicted him. The emperor was a confident, literate and a tactician.
