Abstract

The philology has not reached consensus about the question: how far did the witnesses’ reports of the apotheosis influence the public burial ceremony of the Roman Emperors (consecratio). These reports appear in the Roman literary tradition since the beginnings, up to the patristic period. The source of this tradition is an otherwise unknown Roman, named Proculus Iulius, who witnessed the ascension of Romulus, the founder of Rome. The witness-motif is obscure and contradictious in the Roman historiography; in our written sources from the second and the third century detailing the consecratio the role of personal authentication is effaced and its function is transposed to an eagle ascending from the emperor’s catafalque. In this article I present a review of these witnesses according to the literary tradition, and after drawing up their mutual features, I would like to enrich their catalogue with an additional, yet unidentified eyewitness.
